The Sound Profile
Character
SMOOTH · SOPHISTICATED · SILKY
Groove-heavy multitrack drums soaked in the funk and soul of New Orleans. Deep pockets, syncopated hi-hats, and bass drum patterns that never stop moving.
The Story
Neo-soul drumming splits the difference between the tight, controlled grooves of classic Motown and the loose, hip-hop-inflected rhythms of '90s R&B. Questlove rewrote the rules — playing live drums that felt like a drum machine but breathed like a human. That combination of mechanical precision and organic feel became the rhythmic foundation for everything from D'Angelo to Anderson .Paak. The drums in neo-soul don't just keep time — they create the pocket that everything else falls into.
This kit lives in that pocket. The grooves are deep, laid-back, and impossibly smooth. The kick patterns are syncopated and musical — playing off the bass line rather than doubling it. The snare sits right in the center of the beat with a lazy, confident crack. The hi-hat work is detailed and dynamic, with the kind of micro-variations that separate a live drummer from a programmed pattern. These drums feel like a late-night session that nobody wanted to end.
Recorded with warmth and intimacy. The kick is round and pillowy with a vintage tone — more felt than heard. The snare has a controlled, dry crack with just enough ring to sustain through a sparse arrangement. The hi-hats are captured in stereo detail to preserve every nuance of the articulation. Room ambience is minimal — the drums sit close and personal, the way they sound on the records that defined the genre.

Our products include full performances, multiple song sections, variations, alternates, and stems so you can arrange, edit, and process the sounds in your own way.
