No. Kontakt is completely optional. All libraries include standard WAV files that work in any DAW without additional software. If a Kontakt Engine version is included, it requires the full version of Native Instruments Kontakt (5.6.5 or higher) and will not run in the free Kontakt Player.

The Kontakt Engine Edition is phrase-based: you arrange and edit authentic recorded performances rather than playing free melodies or chords from a MIDI keyboard. If you're after a playable instrument for live improvisation, these libraries aren't built for that.
