Memphis Sounds Way Human
The Sound Profile
Character
VINTAGE · SWAGGERING · SOULFUL
Shuffling, swinging, and soulful drum grooves recorded with blues authenticity. From Delta-style brushwork to Chicago-style backbeats — every groove dripping with feel.
The Story
Rock and soul drumming shares a common ancestor — the backbeat. But where rock pushed it harder and louder, soul pulled it deeper into the groove. Memphis and Muscle Shoals session drummers like Al Jackson Jr. and Roger Hawkins invented a way of playing that was both powerful and subtle — a snare that cracked on two and four with the authority of rock but the swing of gospel. That hybrid feel is one of the most imitated sounds in recorded music.
This kit captures that vintage pocket. The grooves are deep and swinging — behind the beat just enough to feel like Sunday morning, but solid enough to hold a room full of people on their feet. The hi-hat patterns breathe. The kick accents fall in unexpected places that make the bass line come alive. The snare has that Memphis crack — dry, authoritative, and unmistakable.
Recorded with a vintage approach to match the era. Minimal mics — overheads for the overall kit sound, close mics on kick and snare for definition. The drum was tuned to ring naturally, the way they did in Stax and Hi Records sessions. No damping tape, no gating, no triggers. The room ambience is warm and present. When you drop these stems into a track, they sound like they've been sitting in a soul record for fifty years.

Our products include full performances, multiple song sections, variations, alternates, and stems so you can arrange, edit, and process the sounds in your own way.
