The Story
New Orleans drumming is its own language. The second line beat — that syncopated, polyrhythmic pattern that drives every parade, funeral, and Mardi Gras celebration — has no equivalent anywhere else in American music. Zigaboo Modeliste, Idris Muhammad, and the Meters' rhythmic vocabulary created a drumming tradition that influenced funk, hip-hop, and everything that grooves. The bass drum doesn't land where you expect it. The snare accents shift. The hi-hat dances. And somehow it all makes perfect sense.
This kit captures that rhythmic DNA. The second line patterns are authentic and infectious — syncopated kick drums, off-beat snare accents, and rolling hi-hat patterns that make you want to march down Bourbon Street. The funk grooves are deep and greasy, built around the push-and-pull between the kick and snare that defines the New Orleans pocket. Every pattern was played by a drummer who understands that New Orleans rhythm is felt before it's counted.
Recorded with natural room ambience to capture the loose, breathing quality of New Orleans drumming. The snare is tuned high and dry with the wires slightly loose — that distinctive New Orleans crack. The kick has a round, boomy tone that you feel in your chest. The hi-hats are captured in detail to preserve the intricate patterns. Room mics add warmth and depth. These drums sound like a parade is passing your window.
