The Sound Profile
Character
BRAZEN · THUNDEROUS · UNSTOPPABLE
Swinging multitrack drums with the dynamic range and brush sensitivity of jazz session players. Recorded to capture every ghost note and rim click.
The Story
Volume 2 pushes the big band drumming into soul jazz and funk territory — where the swing gets dirtier and the backbeat gets heavier. This is the sound of the jazz-funk crossover that powered bands like Tower of Power, Chicago, and the Brecker Brothers. The drummer has to swing and groove at the same time — one foot in the jazz tradition, the other in the funk. The ride pattern keeps the swing alive while the kick and snare lock into patterns that would feel right on a James Brown record.
The grooves here are greasier and more syncopated than Vol.1. The hi-hat work is more detailed — open-close patterns that add funk to the swing. The kick is busier, playing off the bass line with syncopated accents. The snare mixes traditional jazz shots with heavy backbeats. When the feel shifts from swing to straight, it happens seamlessly because the same drummer carries both vocabularies.
Recorded with a slightly tighter, more controlled sound than Vol.1 — matching the funk influence. The kick is punchier with more definition in the beater attack. The snare is tuned slightly lower for a fatter crack. The hi-hats are captured in detail to preserve the open-close articulation that drives the funk patterns. The ride still shimmers, but the close mic brings out more stick definition. These drums sit right at the crossroads of jazz and soul.

Our products include full performances, multiple song sections, variations, alternates, and stems so you can arrange, edit, and process the sounds in your own way.
