Artist Spotlight: Espanglish

Espanglish is a band from Mexico City. They mix electronic, indigenous, and Latin music. Their lyrics are written in English and Spanish, in the same spirit as the music tries to erase any musical frontier between genres.

Their intention is to carry around the world a message of unity, love, tolerance and female empowerment, through music and dance.

“Be original! Find that local flavor that is part of your life, transform it, and share it in a universal way so that everyone can understand it.”

Lisette Martell is a composer associated with Trinity College London in 2002, has been singing and touring with pop, folk and electronic music bands ever since. She has composed music or several film and television projects; has a long path in audio postproduction and sound design. Her experienced voice brings solid melodies and powerful lyrics to the band.

Alfredo Fernandez is a musician and producer (as well as screenwriter & director), began his musical career in 1989. He played in various bands until he created Mamá Pulpa in 1996, a project with which he released 3 albums, and that lead him to tour Mexico, Canada and the United States. He also has a long career as a screenwriter and director for several music and comedy TV shows.

What types of projects are you currently working on?

We are working on two albums simultaneously while also releasing the last singles from the previous album.

The first is a new album, with songs of our own. It's a collection of songs we've written since the pandemic started and it's now taking shape as a full album. It excites us so much because we feel that they are very powerful songs that maintain the spirit of our sound, but with many elements that we have not used before.

The other is a collection of covers of classic Mexican music songs which we were working on for a television show. We had to cover two songs every week. The result surprised even ourselves and we decided to release that collection of songs. We managed to perform them in a fresh and original way.

What's the first thing you do when starting a new composition or session?

We normally record the ukulele over the click as a first map of the parts and the harmony. Then, we start adding drums and percussions, bass, guitars, synths and samples, and finally the voice. Then we add more drums, and more synths or samples.

What's your advice for someone who's trying to find their own voice with music right now?

Be original! Find that local flavor that is part of your life, transform it, and share it in a universal way so that everyone can understand it. At the same time, it should be something that no one has heard before outside of your environment. Be true and share what you are, what you think, and what you feel.

What do you find unique and inspiring about We Sound Human sample packs?

We find a very sophisticated sound in every element. It gives us the opportunity to recreate genres that we can't emulate by ourselves. It's exciting to add some different flavors to our music.
