Customer Of The Week: Marty Baggen

What kind of music creative are you?

I'm a Music Producer, Music Composer, Musician, and Video Editor.

What inspired you to start creating music?

My older brother was a blues guitarist and I started listening to non-commercial music of the day... Bowie, Roy Buchanan, lots of classical.

One day, I picked up a songbook with guitar tabs and realized how simple it was to strum chords and actually play along with favorite songs.... it was revolutionary.

What is your studio setup?

I'm PC-based using Reaper after stubbornly hanging onto Sony ACID for years. Cut my looping skills on ACID. Happy to see it has been updated and acquired by Magix, but Reaper offers a more capable multitrack environment. Izotope's suite of Nectar, Neutron, and Ozone are my go-to in the mixing and mastering process.

Do you play any musical instruments?

I play a lousy guitar, but I'm a virtuoso compared to my keyboard playing.

What type of music do you create?

I've finally settled on the genre of Indie-Rock. We Sound Human has been invaluable to help fine-tune my sound to more accurately fit into that category.

I'm currently working on three new tracks and going to set out revitalizing my back catalog (60 to 70 songs) with We Sound Human ingredients to pump some Indie life into them.

What is your creation process?

Progression and usually lyrics are complete before recording anything (it's very difficult for me to put words to an existing music track.... they sorta need to be born together).

I'll grab my '68 Tele and rifle off a scratch track, map out the sections of the song along the timeline, then either carve up existing live-recorded drum tracks (Travis Whitmore.... excellent session drummer for online drumming services), or now, with the discovery of We Sound Human, I'll start placing appropriate multi-track drum tracks until the song is filled.

Next comes the bass. Key changes in Reaper are not as elegant as good old ACID, so I'll create a folder of empty tracks, each with a different semitone tweak (either up or down)... then I will drop in a multi-bar bass phrase, slicing and dicing and moving to the appropriate re-pitched track... and viola'... in about 60 minutes total, my scratch guitar is now accompanied by the final percussion and bass tracks. If it doesn't happen as fast as that, I get bogged down and lose interest.

After that, additional instruments (either played live remotely by colleagues from around the world, or loops such as the guitars found in the We Sound Human Fury, Guitar Sessions packs, etc).... finally, vocals.

What project are you the proudest of?

I seem to be the proudest of whatever the latest track I've completed.... probably because after each one, it's hard to imagine I've got another one in me.

And that is the challenge.... keeping things interesting and fresh while not falling into a navel-gazing trap of producing stuff that you are biased into believing sounds great, when in reality... it's downright awful.

Where can people hear your music?

I don't do social, but stuff will be on Spotify soon. I also urge creators to consider TAXI. They are essentially a pay-for-A&R-services, and it can be a humbling experience... but if you're reading this, you are probably investing enough of your heart and soul that makes it worthwhile to hear reality and advance your craft accordingly.

Why do you choose WSH sounds?

I've been digging into the loop sets and the way the parts are organized is the best I've seen. Having them laid out according to an actual song structure with multi-bar components is wonderful.

Technically, the recordings are fantastic.... all extremely clean with nice consistent levels. The multitrack sets for the drums are essential and top of the line.

"The beauty of any of these loop libraries in a general sense is that they give you the freedom of trial and error... and when you stumble onto that perfect lick or phrasing, you get the credit for being a musical genius."
