What kind of music creative are you?
I'm a Music Producer, Composer, Video Editor, and Film Producer.
What inspired you to start creating music?
I started playing music as a little kid - turning pots and pans into a ragtag drum set. Eventually, that became a real drum set, and soon after I started learning other instruments: guitar, bass, singing, piano, sitar, Balinese gamelan, mandolin, violin, banjo, and a few others.
I just recently got into the idea of adding VSTs to my live instrument compositions.
What is your studio setup?
I have a home studio: ProTools on a MacBook Pro, a couple of nice mics, a ton of live instruments, and now a heap of VSTs and samples.
Do you play any musical instruments?
Guitar, drums, vocals, mandolin, banjo, fiddle, bass, harmonica, piano, trumpet, sousaphone, sitar, Balinese gamelan, penny whistle...and perhaps a few other little things.
What type of projects are you currently working on?
My music most often is a mix of rock and vintage/roots sounds (Delta blues, gypsy jazz, Roma music, trad jazz). There's also a strong world music and cinematic vibe - sometimes it's an accent to singer/songwriter tracks, and sometimes it's an actual film score for a motion picture.
I'm also a film director, and right now I'm in the development of my first feature film, for which I'll also be doing the score (a sort of electrified Bluegrass with splashes or Rockabilly & classical).
What is your creation process?
I usually start a new song or composition in one of three ways: with guitar and singing (which eventually becomes lyrics), with drums, or with a story.
Starting with a story in mind tends to yield my favorite stuff. Also...a lot of times I get wholly-formed songs from dreams, and I force myself to wake up and sing them into my phone or something to capture it. Those also tend to be my favorites.
What project are you the proudest of?
My favorite project was Tango La Melodia, a live multimedia theatrical event mixing music, story, dance, film, and performance art to bring audiences into a cabaret-like world where original Tango, Blues, and Gypsy Jazz music blended with a surreal story involving a traveling musical ensemble.
After several sold-out runs, we became an actual band for many years. The biggest challenge was managing the schedules and personalities of a 7+ person ensemble.
That...and getting stuck wearing a pencil-thin mustache for many years.
Why do you choose We Sound Human libraries?
I love the quality and expressiveness of the We Sound Human samples. There's a flexibility to the solo lines that allows them to work with a variety of chord progressions, and a diversity of instruments that allows me to create unique ensembles that either embrace their own genre or expand it.
I've been combining Country Roots and Funky Gumbo to create 'bands' that mix Bluegrass and New Orleans trad jazz/Dixieland, and it sounds just like these groups are recording live in the room with each other!
The samples also combine well with other VSTs and live instrument performances.
Where can people hear your music?
